Project in a glance

SAMBA is a international project financed by the European Community's Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) under Unit 5 - Networked Audio Visual Systems and Platforms (NAV).

The project started January 1st 2007 and has a duration of 2 years. It is coordinated by CREATE-NET (Italy) and its international Consortium is composed by partners from Italy, Brazil, Germany and Finland.

SAMBA project main objective is to create a framework for allowing local communities and citizens (including low income population) to access community-oriented content and services by means of iDTV channels.

The role of iDTV in user communities

If digital TV technology is a reality in European countries, it is not yet so in Latin America. Specifically, 90% of Brazilian people have TV in their homes, but only 20% use computers and Internet, thus bringing interactivity to TV is an excellent way to promote digital and social inclusion. Interactive Digital Television (iDTV) presents an ideal way for bridging the Digital Divide not only in Latin America but also all over the world. This is especially true for developing countries such as Brazil where low income population does not have access to technology due to its high cost and required expertise.

Interactive Digital Television is important for addressing eInclusion related issues present in Latin America as well as in Europe, where, within the same country, social factors (such as the digital exclusion of elderly population) and geographical problems (regions with bad infrastructure or isolated) can be overcome through the use of friendlier digital means and devices that is already present in many homes.
